New safe lifts in Courchevel

31st January 2009

This new Magnetic chair lift, (called the Magnestick system) has been specially designed to hold children in the ski lift and prevent them from slipping out beneath the bar.

New safe lifts in Courchevel

The new magnetic ski lifts have been fitted to 6 chair lifts in the Three Valleys, in the French Alps.

A permanent magnet is attached to the back of one seat in each chair on the lift. Children are then secured in the seat by wearing a special Magnestick vest. Making sure the child is kept in place until the lift reaches the top of the mountain, where the magnet automatically releases.

The special vests are limited this season to children in the ESF, French ski school. The plan is from next season for the vests to be available to rent from ski shops throughout Courchevel.

The vests are also padded and hi-vis, adding to the safety.

We're not sure whether the vests would also attract other metal objects to them, I guess this wouldn't really be a problem, but don't lean against any metal posts out there kiddies!

Generally though, this sounds like a good idea to us.
