Roux was quoted as saying he was worried about always "looking over his shoulder" in Britain and has moved from his house near Bray, Berkshire, to an apartment with stunning views in Crans-Montana, the Alpine ski resort.

Roux with elder brother Albert opened Le Gavroche in 1971 becoming the first restaurant in the country to win three Michelin stars.

Since then he has opened the Thameside Waterside Inn and trained more than 800 chefs around the world.

But he claims that Britain has changed so much over the last 40 years and that Switzerland offers a safer environment for his old age.
