There have been 17th skiing related deaths this season in Austria. Which has pushed forward a new law requiring all children beneath 15 years old to wear a helmet across the 23 ski resorts in Lower Austria, starting on the 20 March 2009.

This step will mostly likely result in helmets being compulsory for all children in Austria.

Italy has since January 2005 enforced helmets to be worn by under-14's with a fine of €70-150.

According to Christian Kaulfersch, an Austrian A&E doctor, "crashes at 30mph are like falling onto concrete from a second-floor balcony", and research carried out by Norwegian doctor Steinar Sulheim suggests that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by 60%.

With offpiste, backcountry skiing and snowboarding becoming more popular we believe that helmets should be worn by skiers and boarders of all ages. There are some great new helmets out there (with or without ipod jacks), so how much is your noggin worth?
