Cervinia now has an overhauled ski lift system.
With good snow and sunny weather Cervinia is an ideal ski resort for intermediate skiers; it has a network of high, long, gentle, well-groomed slopes and good mountain restaurant.
Testa Grigia (3,480m) known as Plateau Rosa on the Swiss side provides the main access point to Zermatt. From here, gentle runs drop down to Cervinia via Theodulpass and Plan Maison.
1. Theodulpass
High blue and red pistes from Theodulpass down to the Plan Maison mid-station and on into Cervinia are ideal for improving beginners and nervous intermediates as they are wide, gentle cruising runs.
2. Plan Torrette
Intermediates who can put up with the old chair lifts above Plan Torrette on the south face of the Matterhorn are met with relative solitude on the network of reds here. The long blue 5 piste from Plan Torrette into Cretaz is a great confidence-building run for beginners and tentative intermediates.
3. Testa Grigia
Intermediates can take the eight-mile red descent from Testa Grigia into Valtournenche, which has a vertical drop of 1,956 metres. Follow the red 7 piste to Cime Bianche, where it turns into the gently winding red 1 piste. But be aware that the bottom half can turn icy.
4. Valtournenche
Take the gondola from Valtournenche to Salette then a four seater chair-lift to the ridge of Cime Bianche. There are gentle blues nearer Salette while higher up are some fantastic cruising reds, both areas have some beautiful stark, rocky scenery.
5. Lago Goillet
Goillet lake is beneath Testa Grigia and the red runs that drop down from the plateau by the lake are the steepest in the local ski area. Either repeat the short red runs on the backside of Cime Bianche, taking the Plateau Rosa gondola back up, or descend all the way to the Plan Maison base station.
