Crashes a plenty - stage two of the Giro

9th May 2010

There were lots of crashes in yesterdays Giro d'Italia. It seems that the traffic islands throughout the route were the main cause of the crashes.

Wiggin's tweeted this morning "Team Sky all pretty bumped and bruised this morning but it hasn't stopped us laughing, out for another big day today"

The second stage from Amsterdam to Utrecht started ok, but the second half had constantly changing road widths that seemed to be the cause of all the crashes. Obviously this is a bit of an embarrassment to Amsterdam - a city that prides itself on it's cycling heritage.

The majority of riders were mixed up in a crash at some point in the race. For Wiggins though it was a hold-up near the finish that caused a split in the bunch so that he lost his pink jersey to world champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team).

Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) took a nasty fall on the stage, but climbed back on to the bike to quickly regain his composure and take the bunch finish ahead of Matthew Goss (HTC-Columbia) and Fabio Sabatini (Liquigas).
