There is a real danger of getting sun burnt on the ski slopes, with tens of thousands of Britons heading to the slopes this winter chasing some of the best snowfalls in a generation, we should all be more aware of the dangers of sunburn whilst skiing.

At higher altitudes, UV exposure is higher than at ground level, normally grass and trees absorb the UV, but when covered in snow not only are they not absorbing the UV, but the snow reflects the UV back.

Skiers should pack sun screen and after sun - infact they should be considered as essential on the slopes as warm clothing.

Experts suggest that you should use factor 30 or higher, reapplying every two hours. As well as wearing sunglasses or goggles with UV filters to protect your eyes.

The British Association of Dermatologists said: "The dangers of summer sunbathing are well publicised. However, many people forget that skiing and snowboarding also carry a high risk of sunburn. Participation in winter sports has been increasing but research has shown people often don't think of sun protection in the winter."
