11th March 2009
With mid march rapidly approaching, the snow is still falling across the Alps. All the major resorts are reporting more heavy snow falls this and the past week.
With over 4 meters of snow for the first time in Austria this year and 5 meters in the French Pyrenees its certainly has turned out to be a great season so far, Not mention the French southern resorts, Sierra Nevada in Spain and 6 meters in the Swiss Alps and across resorts in the Itlian Dolomites
Recent snow fall has included more than30cm (a foot) today (March 11) in St Anton, Austria and up to a metre of new snow in some resorts in France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland over the past seven days.
Although this bodes well for the coming Easter holiday period, it also means that the avalanche risk is currently very high, typically at level 4 (second to top category) across the Alps, with resort staff warning that it’s important to stay safe and stay on the piste when in resort.
