Italy - Avalanche Safety Gear Required

23rd February 2009

Daily security ski teams are out looking for potential hazards before you even hit the slopes. We’ve all heard the explosions over breakfast as potential hazards amounts of snow are blown down a mountain to remove the threat of an avalanche.

Italy - Avalanche Safety Gear Required

Well now the Italian’s have decided to bring in laws for off piste skiers and boarders.

Avalanche safety equipment including beacons, shovels abd avalanche probes are all mandatory on your equipment list for anyone heading of the marked ski runs.

The law applies to both boarders and skiers and covers the Piemont region in the north of Italy and supersedes the national law (L. 24 December 2003, n.363) which obliged skiers to use avalanche beacons if there was a clear risk of avalanche.

Any person found not to be abiding by the new law will find them self have a costly day out as fines up to 250 euros will be handed out. And you can’t bet your ski insurance won’t cover you for this trip!
