22nd August 2008
The instigator of the idea was Arnaud Colas-Adler, a pisteur in Tignes during winter, who recognised the need for regular trail maintenance as more and more people are heading to Tignes for its excellent biking terrain. “The park itself is really very well designed, with specific routes for all levels of biker” he remarked. “For example, you’ll find specially shaped and adapted trails for downhillers, not just a hiking trail with a mountain bike sign stuck on it!”
Every morning, the Bike Patrol spreads out, taking a trail each and ensure that there are no unwanted obstructions or undue wear and tear on any of the pistes.
They get feedback from the riders that frequent the bike park, looking for ways to further improve the trails, comments on the lift access etc, as well as advising riders on the best trails for their ability and alerting the rescue services in the case of an accident.
The Bike Patrol isn’t a replacement for the rescue service, they are working very hard on preventative measures, trying to stop accidents from happening in the first place. “We remind riders of the basic safety rules: full face helmet, gloves and back and knee protection is the absolute minimum!”
This weekend (23rd/24th) the bike patrol will be making sure that the trails are in tip top shape, as the 3rd stage of the 2008 VTT Freeride Tour returns to Tignes. Some of the best pro and amateur riders on the planet will be battling it out for a cut of the €5000 prize money up for grabs!
If you haven’t yet tried the Tignes Bike Park for yourself, then you’ve only got a few more days to give it a go before it closes for the summer. From “Easyrider”, a gentle green trail off the Palafour chair that is suitable for the whole family, to the bone shakingly hardcore black descents “Gypsy” and “Blank Metal” on Toviere, you’ll find something to enjoy. The Toviere sector will be closing on Sunday but you’ve got another week to enjoy the gentler riding on the Palafour side.
There are 18175 descents already registered in the park this summer alone.
