Wengen top runs

14th December 2008

Wengen shares it's ski area with Grindelwald. The majority of the runs in the Wengen-Grindenwald area are gentle, cruising red and blue pistes that are ideal for confident beginners and intermediate skiers.

The Eigergletscher or Eiger Glacier, (2,320m) has more challenging pisted terrain.

From Wengen skiers can board the scenic train to Kleine Scheidegg, and then up to Eigergletscher, from where you can drop back down towards Wengen or ski across to Grindelwald.

Or you can take a cable car to Männlichen, for the pistes of Grindelwald and lifts up to Kleine Scheidegg and the Eigergletscher.

While advanced skiers will find little to challenge them on Wengen’s pistes BUT will find plenty of challenging, lift-accessible off-piste – all set against one of the most dramatic mountain backdrops in the world.  Grindelwald also has some brilliant off piste.

Wengen's Top five runs

1. Lauberhorn

Every year at January, Wengen hosts the longest and arguably the hardest World Cup ski downhill races – the Lauberhorn. With a two and half mile descent and 1,000 vertical metres drop from the top of the Wixi chair-lift on Kleine Scheidegg into Wengen. The Lauberhorn is classified as a red piste (when not set up for the ski race) making it suitable for confident intermediates, who'll earn bragging rights by skiing the world cup route.

2. Eigergletscher

The Eigergletscher (Eiger glacier) is the highest point in the Jungfrau ski area. It's worth taking the train up to the breathtaking Jungfraujoch view point athough skiers and boarders should note that you cannot ski down from there.

Instead from a stop lower on the Eigergletscher head down some steep black slopes to the Wixi lift and on into Wengen where a red run will take you to the bottom of the Salzegg T-bar. There is often powder around the Salzegg T-bar ideal for people wanting to dabble in powder skiing or boarding.

3. Kleine Scheidegg

The main access point for all the runs in the shared Wengen-Grindelwald ski area. Nursery slopes at the Kleine Scheidegg train station and crusing long blues down to the mid-station of Brandegg and on into Grindelwald.

4. Männlichen

Wide, open crusing blues a couple of reds. Highly recommended is the long red piste from Männlichen into Grindelwald Grund with nearly 1,300 vertical metres.

5. Off-piste

Wengen is sometimes overlooked by advanced skiers but the scenery is amazing and the off piste and powder can be as good as anywhere. Book a guide to take you to along the famous Whitehair route off Salzegg that runs beneath the Eiger to Alpiglen and very challenging lines down Oberjoch in the First ski area.
